What is a 37signals ID and why do I need it?

A 37signals ID is what we call the one username and password you will use to login to all your 37signals products. This would be Basecamp, Highrise, Backpack or Campfire. If you've set up an account for any of those products or if you've been added as a user by someone else, you'll use your 37signals ID to login.

If you have one Basecamp account and one Highrise account, you'll use the same username for both. If you have two Basecamp accounts (one for work and one for your personal stuff), you'll use one username for those, too. If you just have one account you access, you can still use the same username if you choose to create another account at a later date.

I keep getting a notice that I have to change my username. Why am I being told to do this?

Every user in our system needs to update their username so they can have a 37signals ID. Having a 37signals ID will mean you can link all your accounts with one username, and you'll be able to login directly at our websites. You'll also get to use Launchpad, which is a bookmark page that will list all your active accounts so you can easily login or go directly to a specific page in that account.

I'm only a user on one account. Do I still need a 37signals ID?

Yes, everyone who uses our products will need to have a 37signals ID. If you've created your account after January 1, 2010, you already have a 37signals ID.

If your account existed before January 1, 2010, you will see a prompt to change your username to a new 37signals ID.

The username I want is already taken. How can that be?

Since we launched 37signals ID, we're now requiring that everyone across all our products use a unique username. That means if someone else named John already registered "John" for their account, you won't be able to use that username. You'll need to choose another name for your accounts.

I was invited to join an account, but I already have a 37signals ID. Do I have to create a new one?

If you've already set up your 37signals ID, you don't need to create a new one, even if you're seeing a prompt to set up a new username. Instead, use the links to use your existing 37signals ID.

When you're signing up for a new account, you'll see this at the top of the screen.

When you're accepting an invite to an account, click the links on the right side of the screen to use your existing 37signals ID.

I can't login and I'm seeing an error that my email isn't recognized when I go to Launchpad. Why can't it find my account?

Launchpad can only look up your account and your login info if you've set up your 37signals ID. If you have an existing account but have not created your 37signals ID yet, you won't be able to login through the Launchpad. Instead, you'll need to go to your main account URL to login as you did before.

At that URL you'll be able to recover your login information by entering your email address on file.

My Basecamp account is appearing in Launchpad, but now I want to add my Backpack account. How do I add this to Launchpad?

You'll need to login to all your accounts, go to the My Info page, and switch your accounts to all use your new 37signals ID. Once you change the username on your accounts to be your 37signals ID, those accounts will be added to your Launchpad automatically.

One of my users forgot their login, and I can no longer change it for them. How can I get them logged in?

If one of your users forgets their login, they can click the link on the login page that says "I forgot my username or password" and have their login reset via email.

I'm the owner or admin for my account. Why can't I update my user's personal informaiton or their photo?

We used to allow admins and the account owner to see and change other user's information, but we don't allow that anymore since it's not a secure way to handle account administration. Now the only person who can see your login and change it is you.

How do I link my account with third-party products or RSS feed readers that integrate with 37signals products?

You'll need to use your authentication token for feed readers and third-party products. (Tokens are codes you can type into certain products to allow the products to access your data. Be careful with your tokens — anyone who has your tokens can access your data.)

You can find the token on your My Info page of the product you want to access. Scroll to the bottom and click on the link that says "Show your tokens." One token will give you access to that product's API, the other can be used with feed readers.
